What is the difference between psoriasis and eczema?
Psoriasis and eczema (also called atopic dermatitis) are both chronic skin conditions, but they have different causes, appearance, and triggers.
Feature
Psoriasis
Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)
Cause
Autoimmune disorder — immune system attacks skin, speeding up skin cell growth
Often linked to genetics and a hypersensitive immune response; skin barrier is weak
Appearance
Thick, raised, red plaques with silvery scales
Red, inflamed patches, often dry, cracked, or oozing
Common Locations
Elbows, knees, scalp, lower back, nails
Face, inside elbows, behind knees, hands, feet
Itchiness
Can be itchy, sometimes painful
Usually very itchy, scratching can worsen condition
Triggers
Stress, infections, cold weather, certain medications
Allergens, irritants (soaps, detergents), dry skin, stress
Age of Onset
Often adults (can appear in teens too)
Often starts in childhood, can persist into adulthood
Scaling
Thick, silvery, well-defined
Fine, flaky, sometimes crusted
Treatment
Topical steroids, vitamin D analogs, phototherapy, systemic or biologic drugs
Moisturizers, topical steroids, antihistamines, avoiding triggers
Key differences
- Psoriasis is immune-driven and often thicker with silvery scales.
- Eczema is more about skin barrier weakness and extreme itchiness.
- Location and pattern of patches help differentiate them.
